Scanjet 5200C makes gray & white copies instead of B&W

I'm trying to use a hand-me-down Scanjet 5200C as a copier, by sending its output directly to my HP LaserJet P1006 printer.

I have managed to produce a copy of a black & white document from the scanner, but the copy comes out of the printer in a very pale gray & white instead of the dark black & white of the original.

But when I print a document from a computer file on this printer, it comes out with nice dark printing.  So I don't think the printer is at fault.

Any idea on how I can get the scanner to produce dark black & white copies?
